A number of years ago, while I was teaching the beginning motorcycle riders course for the State of NJ, I was offered this bike by the mechanic who maintained our training motorcycles. He was honest in telling me that neither he nor the two owners before him could ever get the bike to run right. It would only rev up to a certain RPM before it started cutting out. This explained the bike only having 2000 original miles on it. I believe it must have been used on a base somewhere as it has old registration stenciling across both sides of the fuel tank. Not trusting another mechanic’s ability I went through the bike and found absolutely nothing wrong with the ignition, carburetor, distributor timing etc. I finally decided to pop the engine timing cover off and discovered the cam gear was one tooth off. I believe it had to have left the factory that way as there were no tooling marks on the cover retaining bolts and the gasket looked original. The bike ran perfectly after that.
